Plan-view screenshot

Post by jools »

Greetings!

Maybe someone has done this before, but it should amuse...

I took a screenshot, doubled its height, rotated it 45° anticlockwise, then shrunk it back down a bit, and clipped around the tiles I was interested in. Result: a rectangular section of tiles aligned to the axes of the image - no waste trying to fit a diamond into a square. The quality's not brilliant, of course.

First of all, make sure you convert the image to RGB from indexed. Also, instead of doubling the height, try halving the width. That's what I did some time ago, and the results are much better.

The first screenshot below is one I made just now. I actually had one of a 512x512 map but I deleted that a couple of days ago.

You can also do the width halving method to compose full minimaps. The only problem is, they need to be left at the 45° angle position. Otherwise, the pixels get distorted.

Yes, that helps a lot.

Hmm, comparing the attached files created with the Gimp, I'd say double-heighting is just slightly better. Maybe it depends on tools...

Cheers!
