[rel]The greatest fix OTTD has ever seen

Post by Moriarty »

That's right, I've removed all those freaking rail-road crossings from the intro-screen, so you won't get those bells all the damn time. :-)

This was done by replacing the crossings with various bridges.
I also added an extra boy to the hover-craft so they're honking their horns a little less.

Download the attached file and place it into your "data" directory, replacing the current file. No more bells!

I beseech the devs - For the sake of all of our sanity, include this in the trunk! :-D

I can now sleep easy knowing I have helped humanity. ;)

Or you could just load nobells.grf, which should even be static-safe.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

If I had any clue what "static-safe" was, I might be impressed. That or had even heard of nobells.grf. :-)

Except the nobells.grf solution is only any good if you want *all* games to have no bells, not just the opening screen. Personally it would be one of those "first against the wall when the revolution came" things for me... I hate the bells.

Thanks that's.... totally unhelpful. :-/

Even google can't do much more than bring up a irc log:

So you disable it during real games. You can do that, even when it's static, right? (And if not, why not?)

It can even, with a little work and while preserving its staticness, be arranged to load only in the title-screen.

Dalestan - lay off the sarcasm. Of course *I* do, not everyone else does. nobells.grf is a crude sledgehammer to crack a nut that will be solved with the new opentitle.dat game anyway. If it was systematically added to [newgrf-static] (which, BTW, for our other listeners, is a set of newgrf files you can set in your openttd.cfg file as default .grfs that get loaded automatically), then loads of users would then be complaining "my bells dont work, OpenTTD is broken". Generally developers like to minimise support calls, not increase them.

There should be a switch at the bottom right hand corner.

Incredibly, I do in fact have this nifty little feature in the bottom right-hand corner!
I may be wrong, but I think the technical term for it is the "on / off switch" - on my PC speakers :)

I know, I know - it's a pretty obscure and difficult fix to implement - but it works darned well, enabling me to prevent bells on the title-screen, and yet still hear them ingame!

Pretty cool fix huh? ;)

Also, this patch presumably doesn't stop all the other noises, like planes and so on. I would suggest that either there is no patch, or there is a patch that disables all sounds on the title screen (as in the real TT(D)). I don't mind all the sound effects, personally.

?( i don't understand.

What bells ?

i've installed your file, as instructed in your first post, replacing my opentitle.dat file with yours.

only thing i notice is that my OpenTTD, title screen no, longer has sound ?(

I'm running Vista Ultimate, and OpenTTD Beta 2.

Any ideas ?

I wonder if a facility to edit the sounds that are played would be a good feature get a busy map zoom out and listen!

I'm thinking a similar system to the transparency options.
