Hmm.

In the meantime, I started yet another game, mainly because I was curious to give DanMack's new Templongmap a go.
Here are some impressions from the early years. As suggested by Dan, I'm using the UKRS.

Pic 1:

All beginings are difficult - the first line I built is to haul the woods from the two forests near Harding's Mills to the Hunningbury lumber mill. Here we see the double station on the Harding's Mills end. A brand new 0-8-0 is waiting for the workers to load all the wood.

Pic 2:

We pass the first siding, east from Harding's Mills.

Pic 3:

Second siding and we pass another train on the same schedule, returning the empties.

more :D

Pic 4:

the end of the short line is at the Hunningbury lumber mills. a new 0-8-0 is waiting with a couple of bolster wagons to haul the cut lumber back to the factories near Harding's Mills

Pic 5:

Meanwhile, on another edge of the map, a small passenger line from Easton down to Warding Harbour has been built. Here we see the train which will run on that short line fresh from the Sunningvale Depots. It first has to run up to Easton in order to join the new branch line. Here, it is just crossing the viaducts near Sunningvale. Not that thanks to the breakvan, there is no need to have the engine been switched around at the end of the line, but we can now use that small enginge in Push-Pull mode, perfect for the small branch line.

I love the pictures, you do really good looking junctions. And it's nice to see that some people still use my depots. :)

Aaah, you are the creator of those depots... Well done. Thank you.
I love those depots, as you can create stuff like shown on the pics. Looking much more realistic

I've been playing a 512x512 scenario, Alpine Valley, by Svenn. All the town names are obviously Swiss, but I've still used the US Set, so don't be shocked at the lack of cultural coherence. :P

The game has only crawled forward to around 1930, because the day length and freight multiplier switch have been set to 5, so both the time and the trains move slowly. ;)

The final screenshot, showing a significant part of my southern network. The file size is unfortunately rather significant too. It was taken between 1927 and 1930, so there are a few discrepancies, especially between the trees. Inspired by Eis_os' giant DB Set XL screenshots. :)

EDIT: I reuploaded a better screenshot. It was only in this game that I noticed that the Mikado has an animated boiler. :D You can see the fire in the one hauling some paper boxcars at the very top.

The year is 2043 and a small network and effective prodominantly passenger network has developed.

1) Cafinghill Station. 'Our Train' BR120 with a rake of IC coaches and mail vans leaves the low level station. The high level station recieves cross country Regioswinger DMUs.

2) Ronningwell Junction. Here our IC joins the main trunk route that runs NW to NE across the map. A mixed goods hauled by the workhorse of the fleet the BR112 can be seen heading east and a local BR612 is seen approaching Ronningwell.

3) Our train stands in the Westbound through platform. At Ronningwell a BR612 arrives with a local from Cafinghill, a BR112 travels through the centre road with an empty wood train bound for the NE corner of the map and a 'Blue Tiger' hauls a wood train from Ronningwell freight yard towards the avoiding line tunnels.
Further along the line is the main station of New Drendingworth serving as a terminus for local trains and some ICs. Also visible is the wood yard with another BR112 goods and a BR112 wood with a 'Blue Tiger' Freight arriving.

** MORE **

4) Tuttown Junction. The local line from Cundtown joins here. The depot has stored in it a BR38 steam loco with local coaches, this type used to operate the line in the early years before electrificatuion, and a BR420 since super seeded by BR112 push/pull trains.

5) Flindingworth Station is the terminal station for local services both from the east and west. Trains from the east are BR112s hauling a rake of mainline coaches and a single DMU coach to make the trains look like they are push/pull (although they aren't really). The trains to the East are the only remaining ET-30s on the network.

6) Flindingworth Junction is where the main lowland line that we have been following so far, joins the line that rises into the mountains through a series of turnbacks. A grain train prepares to climb the mountains in the opposite direction followed by an identical train to ours. A BR420 crosses the junction also preparing to climb the hill (i think :D)

Sorry folks. Files have uploaded in wrong order. I'm sure you can work it out however

The city Flensmund needs more room for expansion and as the capacity of the old station wasn't suited for new lines after long debates in the municipal administration with Transflex, the plan was to build a new south station complex more outside the town and rebuild a new north complex at the place of the old junctions.

The current situation & the plan:

Construction Stage 1
Now the first construction stage was to rebuild the freight coal line tunnels to make enough room for the new stations. As the old tunnels need a security update anyway, a full new build was accepted by Flendmund even if it means that some old trees get cut.

As the coal line can't be interrupted because it feets a necessary power station for the region a detour for the trains was build.

Construction Stage 2 - South Station
Starting to build the south station, the old line north east line will be fully replaced and reduces the line length aswell.

The south east exit of the new south station will be fully straigth and will get a new PBS signaling system to make the full junction infront of it more efficent. This means a new signaling house (waypoint) needs to build aswell.

Construction Stage 3 - Replaceing the old station.

In stage 3 the old in city stations get removed and a new terminus station will be build. This will allow a quite expansion at the city. The new in city build land can be bought by Transflex, please send offers by mail to TransFlex or simple call us.

The old station buildings are kept and are used for a new museum. The old line infront of the building can be used to show old locomotives...

(Hopefully you liked this little excursion to my current game)

Whatever Flensmund is paying you, Muir & Co. will double it!

I think that station/junction replacement project is quite ambitious, to say the least. Normally, I wouldn't touch such a key area unless the congestion puts a noticeable dent in my profit graph.

Now, I have some of my own screenshots to show. It's a 'follow the train to its destination' story, the kind you've seen and read 50 times before. It'll be fun. :)

Background:
Carouge's explosive growth from a small village of 510 to a city of over 24,000 was fuelled by an extensive system of bus/lorry stations, and the availability of flat terrain. It was so fast that Muir & Co. had no time to react, and prime railway land was lost, dashing hopes of having Carouge as the starting point of our passenger network. We meant to start from Carouge, and then expand west-wards, but instead, we began from Brugg, a city on the other side of the Bern bay, famous for its oil refinement industry.

When expansion slowed in 1930, we quickly took action and steadily bought land for the company's main passenger station. Construction of Carouge Central started in February 1932, and finished about 5 months later. The whole station project actually used a bus station from the mid-20s as a starting point.

With the completion of Carouge Central, Muir & Co. could at last assign trains for passenger service. Our long-distance workhorse is of course the K4 Pacific, but an S2 Northern was bought, in order to measure its performance, compared with the Pacifics, in mountainous terrain. Follow its trail of steam as it goes from Carouge to Martigny, an unprecedented distance in the company's history.

Top:
A map of the western rail network.

Middle:
The train, named 'The Green Baron', is the first of its kind in this company. Seen here approaching Carouge Central, breathing out its earliest steam puffs, and tasting coal for the first time. Carouge itself is filled with brown, grey, and red buildings, all looking exactly the same. My house is the blue one. :)

Bottom:
After leaving the station, the Green Baron races across the vast fields, which are only held back by snow and concrete. This screenshot shows the company's longest stretch of flat track in almost its entirety, which should give you an idea of just how rough and hilly it is here.

Very interesting indeed.

I'm trying to do such major reconstructions as well while keeping the traffic running (not on pause). I have to say tough, that I have never attempted anything on such a big scale.

In the meantime, my game is developing nicely as well, here are two impressions.

First up, Lawrence has now recieved a new station. It is served by three trains currently. on service up north towards Pinewood Hills, where a local line connects to Travers Crossing. Towards south, the mainline runs to Sludgate and towards the southwest, we have the local line running to Gronwell Inlet.
Just south of Lawrence is a small oilfield as well, and you can see one of the trains just heading for a new load.

no 2 shows you the area of Elm Valley. This piece of flat land is quickly developing towards a real industrial hotspot, with a oil-reffinery, where we deliver the oil from Lawrence, as well as a busy sawmill and a local factory, making good use of the plastic and the lumber from the nearby industries.

We catch a last glimpse of Carouge's suburbs as the Green Baron begins climbing up the slopes of St Gall's mountains. You just know it's going to be a long journey. :P

Middle:
We travel by one of the company's more secluded areas, a lonely gold mine station served by our only EF-3 Boxcab, and head for a short passing lane, and then a tunnel.

Bottom:
The passengers meet a busy scene the second daylight hits their eyes, while the Northern pulls the train into yet another passing lane. Bern junction is Muir & Co.'s oldest, and it has been made even more complex (messy) when we added rail links for the passenger trains.

Top:
The Green Baron's first stop is Lower Brugg, home of 'The Bruggery', one of our Pacific-drawn passenger trains. Brugg's petroleum smell, from the nearby oil refinery, is a welcome change to the gasoline smell of Carouge. Well, not really.

Middle:
While heading south, we experience the inconvenience of getting stuck behind an oil train. Not only do those tankers have a low speed limit, but the Mikado in front of them can barely pull them up the slopes. We hear the loud blast from inside the left tunnel. The Bruggery has come!

Bottom:
At Brugg, we part roads with the oil train, since the junction is built to separate freight from other traffic. It unloads relatively quickly, while the Green Baron must wait for a few late, but well-paying, customers. Our next stop will be La Tour de Peilz, so we'll continue south.

Top:
We exit the long tunnel and descend into woodlands. The country station of La Tour de Peilz is the simplest of them all, but La Tour de Peilz is also the smallest town our passenger trains stop at. The station will be upgraded when the town has grown sufficiently large.

Middle:
Just a few kilometres south of La Tour de Peilz is Baden. Since it's another terminus, the trackwork got complicated, although it's nothing PBS can't handle (even OTTD PBS :P). This beautified country station did not appease the local authorities in the slightest, and our station building rights have been suspended. For now.

Bottom:
We're about half-way there. After having been provided with more coal and water, the train now heads north towards La Chaux de Fonds, but it must first continue north-east, around a loop. Otherwise, the gradients get too steep. The train really needs this loop, as the scenic view distracts passengers from the fact that depleted food and drinks were accidentally not re-supplied at Baden.

Muir & Co. saw great potentional in La Chaux de Fonds, and we decided to help the town to plan its growth, rather than let it turn into another Carouge, which explains the additional roads and bridges. Thanks to the loop, citizens had the chance to witness the Green Baron travel by the town centre, and down to the station, attracting hundreds of train fans and curious passer-bys.

Middle:
River Engelberg is the only waterway this train will cross during its journey, and passengers open the window to let the fresh air in. Our next stop, Binningen, can be seen on the lower-left corner.

Bottom:
Despite having seen the Green Baron going across the viaduct bridge in a spectacular fashion, Binningen passengers remain uninterested, and quietly board their train without paying any attention to the company's flagship. The passengers notice the rather barren and desolate mountain side, and realise that the end of their journey is near.
