Because of the large amount of work required, it is most likely that a trains set will be released long before a full graphics overhaul will be ready. But if you want to start work redoing all the buildings, terrain, grass, etc., that will be fine, as it wants to get done sooner or later.

By the way, yes it is possible to adjust the loading speed for various vehicles, I think. Not absolutely sure though.

I'll update the trains table soon.

that's promising. :D i hope there'd be enough slots for various EMUs and DMUs.

You are allowed 36 trains, so we have some room yet.

I tried eh10 but really really toyish...i don't insist that this be adopted.

It looks pretty good to me actually. I think, maybe it could be a little longer, especially in the diagonal views. And the stripes don't really appear in the diagonals. But otherwise, really that's quite respectable and not excessively toylike. I'll put you down for it.

I have updated my tracking site with EMUs. A few of them I still need information on, if you think you can help please take a look.

At this point I believe my list of trains is mostly complete. If you have a specific suggestions as to one I've missed that should be in, post a note saying so, please with a link so I can look at it. We can't have every model variant, I have tried to add a good spread both operationally and in appearance, since Japan has so many great different looking trains. I'm not going to add near-duplicates, like mountain or flat variants that look the same.

Think about the spread both on electric and on non-electrified lines, both for passenger and for freight. Is there a big gap somewhere, where no new equipment appears for a long time? If so, is there something that could fill it?

So please take a look and make comments.

ok my remarks.

maybe c12->c11 (has more power and speed, regarding c12 as identical to c56 in spec)

c53 in place of c57. BTW c57's HP is 1290, not 1750 (that's diametre of drive wheel).
(c55 is more interesting than c53 in terms of its apparence but it retards 7 years and have lower HP.)

maybe ef10->ef12. the latter has significantly higher power so 7 years' waiting may be worth. I'm not sure though.

489->151. (485 and 489 are just mechanically different from 151.)

e351->681 (comes earlier and better specs)

there exist two ef58 and the "star" was the latter one with 2580 HP. (the first type just looks like EF10) your table gives the first type's specs.

581 adds to a variety in the look, although they are mechanically equal to 485. so if there is a place to fill in.

shinkansen 500 is missing

223 if there's slot

candidates for deletion; 100, ef81, 183. they are clearly redundant.(100>0, ef81>ef65, 183>151)...sorry for Sanchimaru...

that's all for the moment.

I want to keep the C12 because it's cute and the the only tank-engine. We could add the C11 also if you think it's needed, you didn't include the C11's data so I don't know how it compares as to performance.

Again, I chose the C57 because it looks so odd (that big thing on the smokestack). The C53 looks basically like everything else. But it does fill a gap, so I'll add it (and keep the C57.) I agree C55 looks nice but is in a "clump" of other locos.

I don't know what the EF10 looks like. You said mostly the early electrics looked alike, so I carefully picked ones that all look different.

OK, I'll call it the 151 instead of the 489 if they are the same otherwise.

I can't find the 681, can you give me a link? If it looks the same as the 351, again I don't care.

I don't know what you're getting at with the EF58. I don't have one listed. Do you mean, what I call an EF10 is really an EF58? I can change its name if that's what you want.

I don't have either a 485 or a 581 in the list. I found a 485 which looks very much like a 183. I'll add a 581 if you can find me one, it isn't on the site I found most of these.

Shinkansen 500 is missing for a very good reason, its nose is so long and pointy nobody can figure out how to draw it so as to fit in a sprite. The 3E4MAX has the same problem, but sanchimaru was able to force it OK. Suggestions?

I can't find the 223, find me one and I'll add it.

The Shinkansen 100 wasn't even on the list, Sanchimaru drew that for free. But I might as well include it because it does look a bit different. If we run out of slots maybe it gets the ax, not otherwise.

I agree, the EF81 and EF65 are about the same. Suggestion for comments, sanchimaru and teacup: would it make sense to roll them into one (which number, teacup?), add a red version, and use them as three different liveries for the same loco, at different times?

The 183 and the 151 may perform the same but they look very different. The 151 is a unique appearance that I don't want to lose, and the 183 is a highly common body type throughout Japan. However, there are a bunch of different model numbers that look the same shape (slightly different liveries, maybe) as the 183; if you want to suggest one of those I'll switch it.

I've updated the list according to your comments, as caveated above, and I'll wait for your next round.

c11 is also a tank engine. and I listed its specs...
here again; c11 intr.1932, 66 tonnes, 780 hp, 85 km/h
If you absolutely prefer c12, it's ok for me. I just recommended c11 because it has better performance, and additionally because I knew c11 though just the name but not c12 until I saw your list.
Again, I chose the C57 because it looks so odd (that big thing on the smokestack).
if i'm not wrong, that mashroom was not there originally, probably added after it has retired from regular use. that's a trick to reduce the air pollution or something.
http://images.google.com/images?q=c57+s ... rt=20&sa=N
ah we can prepare two sets of sprite for each steams, normal one for before certain date and the lidded one after :-)
I don't know what the EF10 looks like. You said mostly the early electrics looked alike, so I carefully picked ones that all look different.
your list has it...
I can't find the 681

in my data list there were ef58(1) and ef58(2), and the famous ef58 is the secund, on your list the specs were drawn from the first one.
I don't have either a 485 or a 581 in the list. I found a 485 which looks very much like a 183. I'll add a 581 if you can find me one, it isn't on the site I found most of these.
here. 583 is almost identical to 581.

hmm..waiting for sanchimaru got in mood of drawing it ?
but i remember just now he answered he would draw it "someday" (it was in the fourth page of this thread) so let's keep one slot for it.
I can't find the 223, find me one and I'll add it.
http://images.google.com/images?hl=fr&i ... a=N&tab=wi
by the way someone has written an article of class 223 in http://ja.wikipedia.org/, i found it.LOL i don't link it here cos altavista's translation was too buggy.
The Shinkansen 100 wasn't even on the list, Sanchimaru drew that for free. But I might as well include it because it does look a bit different. If we run out of slots maybe it gets the ax, not otherwise.
agreed.

some ef65's also get red liveries after privatisation of JNR, so it would be amusing to change livery chronologically anyway. but ef81 has no reason to be unless we introduce AC-electrified tracks, but ofcourse this means either shinkansens can't be separated from the rest, or we can't have non-electrified track at all, let alone re-tweaking of which type of engine can enter which track.

183 is actually a updated model of 151. would be little inconvniences if we fusion them into one slot, and give different cab-car according to the epoch.

another idea is to take 381 tilting train but it makes sens only if "no slow downs at curve for only certain types of engine" is possible. I think someone in the forum was saying it was impossible. but i may be wrong.

BTW thanks for taking up my work. I also slightly updated the diagonal views (four sprites) :D

OK, more changes...

1. You are right, the C11 is a tank engine. I added it. I kept the C12, but we could eliminate one if we run out of slots. We could make the C12 cheaper.

2. Yes, we could do two versions of the C57 if someone wants to draw them. But I like the mushroom.

3. I guess I was blind, I found the EF10. I think it is better to have the EF10 there, than a better EF12 seven years later. The EF10 when it is, fills in a hole.

4. I now see the 681. I'm still confused though. On the link page you found for me, there seem to be two different versions - a long nosed one that looks somewhat like a Shinkansen, and a blunt nosed ones with connecting doors that looks similar to the e351. I have no problem replacing the e351 with a blunt-nosed 681, but I don't want to have yet another smooth pointy nose. Cna you clarify this?

5. I changed the stats on the EF58. But I want to keep the 1946 starting date because it fills a hole. I know this is a kludge. Should I go back to the old stats, that are accurate to the year? I don't want to delay the introduction of that train.

6. I added the 583, using the 581 stats.

7. You win, I added the 500 series Shinkansen.

8. I added the 223, but I don't have data for it.

9. There will be no differentiation of DC vs AC track. Period. It's too confusing. I'm not even sure about differentiating Shinkansens because someone would have to draw it new track so you can tell it apart (which is OK I guess, because it does look different, it's concrete.) So we can combine the liveries of similar electric locos even if they are really from different systems. Why don't you write me a list of which locos should be combined, and which liveries they should have, and when. And of course what stats and name the combined loco should have.

10. Agreed, it would be possible to have the 151 graphically become the 183 at the appropriate time. I'm going to leave them separate for now, but if we run out of slots and want to add more, we can do this.

11. We have a 351 tilting train. The 381 looks the same as the 183. I don't think it's possible to control on a per-train basis how much it slows down on a corner, but I could be wrong (anybody know for sure?)

12. There are still a couple of trains for which I don't know the stats. These are: the Odakyu "Romace" train, the 151/489 and the Class 223. Also, I have no picture for the DF50 diesel loco.

Right now we have 38 trains. We are only allowed 36, so two will have to go. I think the combinations discussed above will take care of this, but if not, we have a few candidates for deletion. Let's make this the last round of elimination, and we MUST make sure we have a good operating mix. Japanese trains are of necessity heavy on the passenger EMUs, but TTD is very freight-oriented and we have to make sure we provide enough to service freight, both electrified and non-electrified.

I updated the site, take a look and let's get the list locked in.

Oh dang, I forgot completely about DMUs, we have to do some serious cutting and consolidation to make room for them. The C12 will now be removed, for sure.

Do I only have to include the two, Kiha 80 and Kiha 281? If so that makes life easier. I went ahead and added them. I think you meant the KIHA 82, not actually the 80, so that's what I showed. And I can't find a picture of the 281, just the 283.

Now we have 39 trains, so 3 have to go. Please tell me which similar locos can be rolled up as I talked about in my previous post. I went back through and nothing jumps out at me as being cannon-fodder, but 36 it must be.

List has been updated.

The 500 series

Post by Sanchimaru »

Hi, everybody!

OK! I love the 500 series Shinkansen. I actually began drawing it, but I realized that its lenght was a problem...

what to do?

1- make the engine sprite be 2 sprites (like the EH500, which is composed of 2 locomotives that look different, not just symetric) thus being one the nose-cab, and other the passenger's area: <=O== / ="""""=

(where < is the nose, O is the cabine, and " are windows  )

2- just make the whole engine fit into the graphic

3- make the engine be 1 sprite, this one being the nose-cab only <=O== and have the passenger cars fit it. However this one would give the problem that the engine would look like had 3 wheelsets instead of 2.

Actually I like best the 1st one, but let anybody make suggestions or give their minds about this matter.

I'll get to work on it anyhow, to see how would it result

NAME CHANGE REQUEST

Please change the name of this thread to "Japan Project." It isn't really East Asia, and never will be, for two reasons:

1.) Nobody could find any information about non-Japanese trains, and
2.) The slots are over-filled as they are and we have to knock some Japanese trains off the list as it is, there's no room for anything else.

So, Japan it is.

- but I think Japan does not have many 'old' trains (especially for 1921-1950 years)
- would be good to see more vehicles, planes, road vehicles, ships
- buildings new to be redrawn
what are you looking at? it's a signature!

1. If you don't think Japan has plenty of old trains then you haven't looked at my site lately. We have a perfectly adequate, not to say excessive, spread, from WW1 on, including freight locos, passenger locos, EMUs, DMUs, and HSR. And there's twice as many more we didn't use for lack of space. As it is I have to cut out three to get down to 36.

2. Japan uses the same planes as everybody else, I expect you'll just use the new Planeset when this comes out. As far as road vehicles, it's true they have their own collection of them (their roads are small and on the wrong side, so they cannot use what everybody else has) and maybe we'll do an RV set after the trains are done. Ships, again, they use the same ships as everybody else, and there are too few slots. Really I think MB's original ship set will be the last word on the subject, at least until (unless?) Josef figures out a way to allow more.

3. You are quite right, new buildings would be required for a complete new environment, as well as new trees, new bluer grass, new town-names, new industries, new industry vectors... One thing at a time. 8)

the 500 series Shinkansen

Post by Sanchimaru »

THis is the very 1st release of the 500 series Shinkansen

You can see what it looks like as sepparate and together sprites.

But now we've got another problem:
I thought on having the sprite splitted into 2 parts, front and rear...
But now I realize that by doing so we would miss the fact of having the 2nd head...

So at the end the engine must be the nose, only... maybe it will look weird.

I use DOS TT (I downloaded Win version, but I get a directX problem when trying to install it...) and have no idea about how to compile graphics to see what it looks like in the game...

hi Sanchimaru

in fact 500's head car has around its half length as slant part. so I think it would not look weird if you prolong the slant part up to 70-80%.

I thought the 500 was more grey than blue, like the second example. I think the window doesn't bug out that much though.

Sanchimaru, I will help you get the Windows version running, that is really what you need I think. First, what version of Windows do you have, and second, do you have all the Windows Update patches installed?

Classes 3000 through 10000 have boggies between carriages in TGV-like way, and the length of indivisual carriages is around 80% (cab wagon) or 60% (middle car) of a standard JR carriage. I think this is reproductible now in the game.

Of three panoramic trains the first differs slightly from the other two in specs, but I think all three could share the same slot even if that means class 7000 and 10000 become weaker than actually. 110km/h or so doesn't require enormous HP to achieve anyway. (Ofcourse it would be better if specs can be associated to each sprite instead of slot but I'm sceptical on this -- if possible, some vehicle set would have used it already)
