We should not make hard limits based on people's current processor speed. A computer that's cool now is laughed at next year. This game is going to take a lot of time to devellop.

I agree, no hard limits, but we need to make sure it is reasonably accesaable to older computers.

Very interesting that after discussing the advantages of a 3D engine and seemingly agreeing on some things the poll is going more and more towards 2D.

So you think you will still have no GHz computer in 2-3 years?

3DTT runs quite well on 500 MHz and a GeForce 1. And the engine is not well optimized since it origins from 1998 when a Voodoo 2 was what the GeForce 5 is today.

There is one big thing in 3DTT that could not have been foreseen and that was the overload of textures that the graphics artists habe done. They exceed 90 MB and consist of about 1200 bitmap images. What slows down the engine is the texture switching during rendering and that the textures do not fit all into the video card.

Solution: Packing textures into fewer but larger single pics and having fewer textures at all.

To do this I would have to change all the models that have been added since 2001. So I don´t do it.

You have the opportunity to do it better.

Forget about the missing features, they do not consume cpu or graphics power.

Peter

anyone ever considered that part of ttd's longevity stems from the fact that it will run on almost anything from a 386 up?

No, why should I like a game on my 1.7 GHz PC because I know it also runs on a 500 MHz?
