The problem with heightmaps and rivers

Post by sage »

The problem with heightmaps and rivers: Is that rivers flow downstream and locomotion does not support (it shouldn't anyway) gradually sloping water...

e.g. my map for the netherlands has some steep canyons with rivers flowing through them to the right. (which is ofcourse not correct)

But ofcourse the rivers at the right side of the map should be a lot higher then they should be on the left of the map, because they flow downstream.

How should we handle this?
any ideas?

If you have that problem in an almost flat country as the Netherlands, Imagine how hard is to model Spain where there are many rivers that flow from 1000 m to sea level!!!!

PS Edited because I wrote "an almost FAT country as the NL..." but of course I missed the "l" Sorry for my mistake!

The same problem exists in sweden.. rivers flowing from about 1000m height.
I know of one solution: Build a hooverdam. They solve much of the height difference problem.

You could either make "steps" ( remember you can raise water in the scenario editor or like I do, go over with black throughout all the rivers. ( this will however produce realy steep and ugly mountain walls around the rivers )

It never rains, so the rivers would look they just flow from nowhere. Canal Locks would make sense though.

Er, it's called a "dam". "Hoover Dam" happens to be the name of one particular dam in the US ;)
