Loco Dat Directory
Hello all!
I am trying to put together a directory (not a repository) of all objects for Locomotion. There are good topics on this forum listing many popular packs and where to find them, but there isn't a great list of everything. Many hosting sites have gone offline and the objects are no longer available. It's all a bit of a disorganized mess, and I'm trying to put it all in one place.
I cannot (yet?) host the files for download, but I can include links to where they are currently hosted. And, if you try to load up a cool new scenario, and you get the error "missing whatever.dat", you can use this to figure out where & what it is. I have a long way to go, please tell me of packs I am missing.
Please do have a look:

Re: Loco Dat Directory
Cool idea. Especially since it is always asked for individual files.

it would be useful to display the mods that people have made since 2004 and where they came from and if there is any copies available for download

Re: Loco Dat Directory
Yes, Chris Sawyer's original objects are formatted a bit funny. Every image is a different size, and the html container I set up was for images all of the same size. Anyway, now it's all fixed!
Currently processing all Walter1940's mods. There's just over 10,000 objects! That's awesome, and that takes so long for my pc to process.
I should be done in a few days. (as free time permits...)

Re: Loco Dat Directory
I think I've found and cataloged a majority of the mods out there. If I've missed anything please point me to it. I'm trying to implement a way to search and sort the entire directory at once, instead of what I have now, where you can only sort thru one "pack" at a time. This smaller database size was a limitation I think I've solved (thank you DataTables).
In order to have intelligent searches, every object in the directory needs to be tagged. Each object can have multiple tags that describe and categorize the vehicle. So... I'm asking you all, what tags do you want to be ale to search & sort by?
Many are already built in to the .xml :
Class number, (Vehicle) Type, Track Type, Designed, Obsolete, Speed, Power, Weight, Reliability, Length, Sprites, Cargo
I'm planning to add these to my directory :
(1) category: (this is kind of a duplicate of what's already built-in)
train-standard, train-narrow, bus, truck, tram, airplane, helicopter, ship, building, industry, tree, sound, climate, station, airport, seaport/dock, track, road, bridge, wall/fence, company/logo, currency, exhaust/steam, cargo, town-name,
ground (grass, dirt, rocks), headquarters, hillshapes, interface (Default Interface Style), grade-crossings, signals, regions, scaffolding, street-lights, electric-spark, scenario, tunnel, water,
track-mods (3rd rail, rack rail, overhead wire), road-mods (one-way, can have street lights),
(2) vehicle type:
(train) locomotive, freight car, passenger car, caboose, mixed(?), other
(bus) 2-axle, 3-axle, single level, dual level, flexible
(truck) 2-axle, 3-axle, trailers...
(tram) trolley, single-unit,
(3) engine type:
diesel, electric (overhead cat), electric (3rd rail), steam, other, gasoline
(4) cargo carrying style:
chair, boxcar, open hopper, covered hopper, tank, flat, gondola, gondola-dropbottom, center-beam, autorack, steel-coil, skeleton log, lowboy ...
(5) locomotive/vehicle model:
gp9, gp7, f7a ... mikado, big boy, challenger, mogul, bus with/without flexible section, semi-truck,
(6) company:
bnsf, atsf, sf, bn, up, cn, centp, sp, wp, canp, cnw, cn, ns ...
(7) creator:
original, CLW, AMI classic/donation-ware/original, EDS, SeelenQuell, Walther1940, Zimm, Zeak ...
(8) wheel arrangement:
2/4/6/8-axle diesel, 0-4-0, 2-8-2, 4-8-8-4 ...
(9) Region:
America, Canada, Mexico, Germany, England, Switzerland, France, Russia, Spain ...
Imagine being able to sort for Southern Pacific 2-axle diesel locomotives across all 20k+ mods!
Maybe one day this tagging and sorting will be implemented to openLoco, but my goal is to have a 3rd party asset that organizes everything and allows players to maximize the potential for this old game.
Can you think of any more tags I should add? Should anything be re-named? How would you like to sort you trains? You can probably tell I live in the USA, and I don't have a good grasp on European terminology. A more internationalized naming scheme may be in order.

Re: Loco Dat Directory
You put a lot of time and effort into this. My respect,
However, I think that points 5, 6 and 8 are unnecessary in your list. This only makes it confusing, since these points are already in most vehicle descriptions.
This is not meant to be a criticism. But it seems then too overloaded.

Re: Loco Dat Directory
You are correct, Walter. It will be duplicate information on some of the mods. Your vehicles and mods from the mega-pack have very good descriptions, that is not the case for every creator. There's a lot of good mods I've found that I don't want to be left out just because they have poor descriptions.
Also on my website, you can search with multiple terms or words, and it will look for matches and partial matches across all the columns. It this data gets imported into excel, or maybe even integrated into openLoco, this searching and sorting may not be as flexible.
Anyway... It's certainty more work for me, but I don't want to remove any types of tags yet. After I'm done, if we say "wow that was all useless" or "it's too much and too confusing", then it can be deleted pretty easily.

Re: Loco Dat Directory
OK, of course I assumed how Plasicman and I did it normally. There, the mods are already identifiable by the main designation.
But don't let that stop you. It might even make a lot of sense. I don't know. And we won't know until we have an overall view.

Hey guys, check out the Directory again, and the New Master Table. You can search thru everything at once now. No tags yet, but as Walter alluded to, the descriptions have lots of helpful search terms already.

Excellent work. I use your website often to crosscheck the stats of my vehicles - easier than having to look for the dat, convert to XML with LocoTool and search through the XML for the required values.

Wow! what a list..
But I for sure didn't make so many mods. As I modeled everything poly by poly in my spare time.. not to mention the texturing.. I'm not sure, but I think almost anything that doesn't start with SQ is not by me. Ok I did create some graphics for others. But not that many. I also made a few unofficial ones for some members which were nowhere to be found. But I like to keep it that way.
If you have questions, just ask here on this site. I'll have a look from time to time.
Cheers SQ

Re: Loco Dat Directory
Hello Seelenquell,
You're right, I have have a few extra mods in the directory with you as the author. Your site shows 594 made by you, my site says 640, but about 30 of those are sound files. I only see 10 .dat's that start with SQ not made by you. So it's pretty close, I did find a few duplicates. It looks like some of your work was uploaded to TT Fourms, AMI trains or Winsim Welt, maybe included in packs.
So... I guess it depend on how you count it all!
I'm glad you all are finding the directory so helpful. With openLoco taking off (check out their Discord), a lot of new players seem to become frustrated when they load up a new map, and have to spend hours looking for all the required mods. I'm hoping to relieve that frustration and help grow the community. OpenRCT is incredible, and I hope openLoco can reach that potential too!

Re: Loco Dat Directory
I think that it would be interesting to use custom DAT directories.
If you start the application without arguments, it loads the default directory (ObjData), but if you add something like this:
it reads those directories as well.
This allows to use different configurations if you use different rules.

Code: Select all
Openloco -ReadDir "ObjData\mysignals" -ReadDir "ObjData\UKtrains" -ReadDir "ObjData\my_landscape_objects"

Sorry if my english is too poor, I want learn it, but it isn't too easy.
