Laick's graphics attempts

Post by Laick »

TTD and it's graphics always fastinate me and I've decided to try to make some graphics too. I've started 2 days ago, and here is the result:

What is it? It's typical socialistic block of flats, good for the zone between city center and suburb. Billboards are typical for this sort of buildings, I've place one to the right side of the building.

I welcome your opinions ;)

That look extremely good. I agree that the billboard is perhaps a little thick, but I really like the building itself.

Great work!

My guess is that the brown part is part of the building.

It's technically very good, although I don't like the rendering of the walls. Try a colour randomiser, rather than simply alternating colours.

Not too bad, practice a bit more with your texturing and shading, and you should be about right :)

Raichase, Aegir: I was trying to do something like this: (see 2nd attachment), but if it isn't good, I have a randomised version too (see 1st attachment) ;)

Randomised version looks much better - I'd suggest using the same method on the reddish-brown section the billboard is on, then it will look very much at home with the TTD buildings :)).

Raichase: OK (see 1st attachment)

And I've made new building - another typical socialistic block of flats, usable in rows ;) (see 2nd attachment)

EDIT: added a mock-up of new block of flats
EDIT2: I've made the windows on new block of flats a bit darker. Screen wasn't updated.
EDIT3: screen updated

The randomised first building looks cool. 8)
The second one: I think the left facing wall needs to be a shade darker. Plus the windows could do with being a lot less...erm.... obvious? (If you get what I mean? A more subtle colour and effect) :)

Im not sure why, but so many of the new building GRFs seem to look too clean and not very weathered/textured. I wonder whether its a skill of the original artists or whether we are tying to draw things too complicated maybe? I love the new TTRS etc. but a lot of the buildings just look too clean to me and dont match the other graphics 100%. :?
(Hmmm, maybe an interrogation of Micheal Bunck may help as he seems to get good texture on his buildings...)

I have a question: Can be the "water colours" coded as a normal colours without any effects? :P That colours are very good for the windows. Thanks.
EDIT: And what about CC colours? They are looking nice too :)

A few quick comments, while the shape of those buildings is certainly very impressive I think the shading on both of the roofs could be improved slightly by more randomisation and perhaps more than two colours.

The same goes for the walls of the apartment block, I like the shape, but I think they need a tad more shading.

I think the windows are perhaps a little too blue, compare them to the windows of other TT-buildings and the windows you see around you outside, glass generally isn't blue unless (relatively rarely) it's reflecting the sky.

Don't get the wrong idea, I'm only being so critical because I think you have serious potential here and I want to see you improve into a seriously good artist!

edit: I think the scale of the windows is slightly out too, they appear very large compared to the windows on other buildings, compare them to some of Zimmlock's work for example.

SuperTycoon:
Realistic windows? Hm, and what about this  ?

Ad roof: I've improve it

Ad shading walls: Do you mean shading as I made on the right side of the building?
